KAUST Researchers Join OceanQuest’s Inaugural Expedition Around Africa to Advance Marine Science

Jeddah, May 8 (Daily Frame): Researchers from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) have participated in the inaugural marine research expedition organized by OceanQuest, a Saudi non-profit foundation dedicated to advancing ocean exploration and scientific discovery. Conducted aboard the technologically advanced research vessel RV OceanXplorer, the expedition marked an important milestone in Saudi Arabia’s expanding role in international marine research, ocean conservation, and scientific collaboration.

The expedition brought together scientific expertise and advanced oceanographic technology to investigate marine biodiversity, underwater geological formations, and the complex ecosystems surrounding seamounts across African waters.

The initiative also reflects Saudi Arabia’s broader commitment to strengthening national research capabilities, developing scientific talent, and establishing international partnerships in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.

Exploring Marine Biodiversity Across African Waters

The research expedition commenced in Moroni, the capital of Comoros, before proceeding southward through the Indian Ocean toward Cape Town, South Africa.

During this phase, researchers focused on assessing marine biodiversity around several seamounts, which are underwater mountains rising from the ocean floor.

These geological formations play an important role in marine ecosystems by influencing ocean currents, supporting diverse marine organisms, and creating habitats for numerous species.

By examining these underwater environments, scientists aimed to improve their understanding of marine biodiversity, ecosystem distribution, and the geological processes that shape the ocean floor.

The research involved collecting scientific samples, conducting underwater observations, and mapping ocean depths to gather valuable information about marine environments that remain relatively unexplored.

The findings are expected to contribute to a broader understanding of ocean ecosystems and provide useful scientific insights for future marine research initiatives.

Supporting the Next Generation of Ocean Scientists

Following the initial research phase, the expedition continued with a second stage specifically designed to provide practical training and research opportunities for early-career oceanographers.

This phase traveled northward toward Walvis Bay in Namibia before concluding scientific operations in Mindelo, Cabo Verde.

The program provided emerging researchers with an opportunity to participate in real-world oceanographic investigations while working alongside experienced scientists and utilizing advanced marine research equipment.

For young scientists, participation in such expeditions offers valuable exposure to the challenges of conducting research in remote ocean environments, including scientific sampling, data collection, geological assessment, and marine ecosystem analysis.

The initiative highlights the importance of developing a new generation of researchers capable of addressing complex environmental and scientific challenges.

KAUST Researchers Contribute to Critical Scientific Investigations

The KAUST research team included three PhD candidates, two representing the university’s Marine Microbiome Lab and one specializing in Earth Science and Engineering.

Their participation contributed to several important scientific activities, including biodiversity assessments, seamount investigations, oceanographic mapping, and chemical analyses.

Researchers from the Marine Microbiome Lab focused on scientific investigations relevant to marine ecosystems, while expertise from Earth Science and Engineering supported the expedition’s geological research objectives.

One of the key areas of investigation involved understanding the formation of seamounts in the Indian Ocean.

These underwater geological structures provide important information about volcanic activity, tectonic processes, and the long-term evolution of the ocean floor.

By studying their formation and characteristics, researchers sought to develop scientific insights that could also be relevant to similar geological features found in Saudi Arabian waters.

Such comparative research may support future investigations into the geological history and environmental characteristics of marine regions surrounding the Kingdom.

    Advanced Technology Strengthens Ocean Research

The RV OceanXplorer provided a research platform for conducting scientific investigations across different marine environments.

The expedition included ocean depth mapping, sample collection, and chemical analysis, allowing researchers to gather information about underwater geological structures and surrounding ecosystems.

Ocean depth mapping is particularly important for understanding the physical characteristics of the seabed, identifying underwater formations, and supporting scientific investigations in areas where detailed geological information may be limited.

Meanwhile, collecting and analyzing marine samples helps scientists examine environmental conditions, biological diversity, and the chemical characteristics of ocean waters.

The combination of these research methods provides a more comprehensive picture of marine environments and supports efforts to understand the relationship between geological processes and biological ecosystems.

For the participating KAUST students, the expedition offered an opportunity to apply academic knowledge in practical research settings and gain experience using scientific techniques outside conventional laboratory environments.

Strengthening Saudi Arabia’s Global Scientific Presence

The collaboration between KAUST and OceanQuest demonstrates Saudi Arabia’s growing commitment to oceanographic research and international scientific cooperation.

Through initiatives such as this expedition, Saudi researchers can participate in scientific investigations beyond the Kingdom’s territorial waters while developing expertise that may contribute to domestic marine research programs.

The expedition also aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, which emphasizes scientific innovation, knowledge development, environmental sustainability, and the advancement of national capabilities.

By investing in scientific education and supporting participation in international research missions, Saudi Arabia aims to strengthen its position in fields that are increasingly important for environmental protection and sustainable development.

Marine research is particularly relevant to the Kingdom because of its extensive coastlines along the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf, where understanding marine biodiversity, underwater geology, and environmental changes is essential for long-term ecosystem management.

Expanding Opportunities for Future Marine Discoveries

Beyond its immediate scientific objectives, the OceanQuest expedition represents an opportunity to strengthen cooperation between research institutions, develop technical expertise, and encourage greater participation among young scientists.

The experience gained by KAUST researchers in biodiversity assessment, seamount studies, chemical analysis, and ocean floor mapping can support future research activities within Saudi Arabia and internationally.

As scientific interest in the world’s oceans continues to expand, research expeditions of this nature are important for improving knowledge of underwater environments and the processes that influence them.

The inaugural OceanQuest expedition around Africa illustrates how international collaboration, advanced research infrastructure, and scientific training can contribute to a deeper understanding of marine ecosystems.

For KAUST and OceanQuest, the mission represents a step toward expanding marine scientific knowledge, empowering emerging researchers, and supporting Saudi Arabia’s ambitions to become an increasingly active contributor to global ocean exploration and environmental research.
